Interact Valentines Rose Day
For Hellenic, the Interact Valentine’s Day Roses exchange has become a tradition. Not only does a sense of excitement and suspense ripple through our school, but the question is, ‘Will I receive a rose?’ echoes through the whole pupil body.
For the first time in two years, the Interact society was able to organise the customary exchange of roses that brings many smiles into our school every year. The event this year on the 14th of February was even more anticipated than usual.
As Grace Henderson, the Head of the Hellenic Interact in 2022 explains;
“For Hellenic, the Interact Valentine’s Day Roses exchange has become a tradition. Not only does a sense of excitement and suspense ripple through our school, but the question is, ‘Will I receive a rose?’ echoes through the whole pupil body.”
The support for roses this year has been truly phenomenal. The funds raised are in support of our service focus, Arena of Liberty, a primary school in Domboshava, run by Mrs Happy. As a women in her sixties, Mrs Happy has built every classroom, transporting rocks from a nearby river, cementing them together with a mixture of cow dung, lime, mud and water.
With the money raised from Valentine’s Day, Interact will be able to purchase cement, bricks, paint, and tiles. Additionally, one of our long term goals is to construct toilets for the school- as they are currently utilizing a meter deep hole, and a rubber tire.
“Without our Valentine’s Day Rose exchange, none of this would be possible. Besides the fact that it has created a day which bubbles with anticipation and excitement, our club’s projects are fuelled by the pupils’ generosity, and for that we could not be more grateful,” explains Grace.
From us at Hellenic Academy we hope that your Valentine’s Day was as happy as ours at school, full of love and laughter.
